GPs

Consulting your GP or other health workers in your local general practice is a sensible choice to help you deal with a gambling related issue. Gambling can badly affect your physical and mental health and your GP knows how to help. These visits are always confidential and together you and your GP can decide what sort of help you need.

Make an appointment to talk to your GP or another health professional in your local general practice.

Psychologists

Psychologists specialise in human behaviour and assist people to address everyday problems and common mental health issues. Psychologists are different from psychiatrists, who are medical doctors trained in dealing with mental illness. Psychologists do not have a medical degree but most study at university for at least six years before they can be registered. In South Australia qualified psychologists can only practice once they are registered with the South Australian Psychological Board. The Board is able to recommend psychologists and address complaints about registered psychologists.

Social Workers

Social workers are able to provide a number of services including advocacy, mediation, case-management as well as therapeutic counselling.  A social worker must achieve academic and practical qualification in order to be eligible for member of the Australian Association of Social Workers.  Once they have achieved eligibility they are able to practice as social workers. While most social workers are employed in government and community services there are individuals who work in private practice.
